Hello! My name is Aili Schmeltz, I am a professional visual artist living and working in Los Angeles. My work is sculpture, installation, video, and drawing in media. The art works that I create are centered conceptually around place—I make work about particular places, the social and environmental history of these places, typically made with materials gathered from the places.
My fascination with Cappadocia, Turkey began as a freshman in college when I stumbled upon a book about vernacular architecture entitled Prodigious Builders by Bernard Rudofsky. This book has been very inspirational for me in my last 17 years of art making. The book introduced me to the cave dwellings of Cappadocia that have captivated and mesmerized me ever since. I discovered the Babayan Culture House Residency Program and instantly knew that I needed to continue an ongoing body of work that has developed in other places, most recently in the Berlin Tours series.
The Berlin Tours series was a collaborative project produced during the summer of 2009 in Berlin, Germany. The documentary project includes home tours and walking tours of the city—these “tours” were performed with the intent of getting to know the city through its public and private spaces while questioning ideas of perception.
